Swiss HEMA promotes the practice of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). The (re)discovery of these arts is based on the documentary study of European heritage between the thirteenth and twentieth century and covers various disciplines. Activities related to these practices are distinct in their means, methods and objectives, from historical reenactment, choreographed show fighting, sport fencing and asian martial arts. The objectives of the Federation are:

  • The promotion of the practice and study of HEMA in Switzerland;
  • Organising an annual event (tournament and/or symposium); and
  • Support groups in their practice and communication between them.

We try to accomplish these objectives through the action of our commissions. The Instruction Commission develops standards for HEMA education and furthers training for trainers and trainer assistance (monitors and instructors). We look to define competition rules and train judges for international and national tournaments, and build the competitiveness of our community through our Competition Commission. Our Openness and Safeguarding Commission, has set out our Commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (see below), and provides resources for our member clubs to ensure a welcoming culture and safe HEMA community. We also support communication and exchange between clubs by promoting the annual Swiss Gathering and other events of common interest.

Swiss HEMA is committed to treat everyone in the HEMA community with respect, and without judgement or bias, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, age or appearance, abilities, civil status, social background, religion or beliefs, ethnicity or national origins.
