MONTANTE – PRINCIPLES & SCENARIOS

An approach to two-handed sword mechanic fundamentals and experimentation in techniques from Godinho’s and Figueyredo’s Iberian montante treatises.

The instructor

Niccolò Menozzi, from Reggio Emilia, is an Italian HEMA practitioner since 2016, independent history researcher and athletic trainer. Founder of the Spadone Project (2018), an independent initiative aimed at finding and archiving data and historical evidence on two-handed swords.

Program
Saturday 27 // 9:00 – 12:00: Warm up, introduction to Iberian montante and basic exercises to understand and get comfortable with the weapon.
Afternoon // 13:30 – 17:00: Introduction to fighting scenarios and exercise with rules from Godinho’s and Figueyredo’s treatises. According to time, no more than 4 rules will be practiced.
Sunday 2

8 // 9:00 – 13:00: Warm up and introduction to 3 more fighting scenarios and respective rules. With the remaining time available the participants will take part in a non-competitive experimental game.

Any guest wanting to join the event at a restaurant in Mendrisio, at his/her own expenses, is invited to express the wish to participate in the registration email.

Needed equipment
Any kind of non-sharp steel or nylon two-handed sword (montante, spadone, Schlachtschwert, etc) and/or a solid wood staf as long as reaching nose or eye level. Clean gym shoes, fencing mask and protective light gloves (eg. Red Dragon). Other protective gear can be used but is not strictly necessary. One handed steel or nylon swords are not mandatory but may be useful to practice as sparring partner during exercise.
